History of SWU
Southwest University (SWU), an amalgamation of the former Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University, was founded in July 2005 under the approval of the State Ministry of Education (MOE) and was granted to be a "Project 211" university as a national educational priority for the 21st century. SWU is a comprehensive and national key university directly subordinated to SEA. The university, which has more than one hundred years of education history, is situated at the foot of Jingyun Mountain---one of national scenic attractions, and by the side of beautiful picturesque of Jialing River in Beibei, Chongqing.
After a long period of construction and development, SWU has developed teacher education and agricultural education as its distinguished features and advantages. It has trained for the country more than 200,000 students of diverse specialties. The disciplines of education, psychology and agronomy have their outstanding priorities. The research of genome of the domesticated silkworm and the research in the field of basic psychology and education enjoy first-rate level all around the world and throughout the nation respectively, and have obtained a number of important scientific research outcomes, marked as Natural no tillage and ridge culture, genome of the domesticated silkworm, research of education and psychology southwest ethnic groups, human being temporal cognition research. Several hundred of new research fruits and technologies have been applied and promoted to production, and have achieved great economical and social benefits.
SWU occupies an area of about 9,000 mu, with a total floorage of 1,500,000 square meters. Currently, SWU has an enrollment of over 50,000 full-time undergraduates, master degrees candidates and doctoral degrees candidates.
SWU has 2 key state disciplines and 35 key provincial / ministerial disciplines. It also houses 27 key provincial / ministerial laboratories, 1 key ministerial research base for liberal arts & social sciences of MOE, 6 key municipal research bases for liberal arts & social sciences of Chongqing municipal and 9 Post-Doctor Working Stations. SWU is still a leading unit of "State College student cultural competence education base" in Chongqing area. SWU offers 97 specialties for undergraduates, 159 specialties for Master candidates and 66 specialties for Doctoral candidates, and 5 for specialized master degrees candidates, covering 11 categories and 42 first-grade disciplines.
SWU develops academic exchange and research cooperation with universities and institutes in about 30 countries and regions, including United States, England, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Russia. So far, it has successfully established collaborative relationships with more than 20 universities and research institutes overseas.
